“During the summer of 2006, Ocean Ana Rising provided meditation, resistant writing, and mask making workshops to women served by the District of Columbia’s Crime Victims Compensation Unit and female youth members of Barrios Unidos-Virgina Chapter.  These workshops were provided at no charge to the host institutions and their clients.  The catalyst for these workshops was our communal need for healing from the deep wounds born of a violent cultural reality.  The Artists in Residence who provided these workshops have each been trained formally and experientially.  It is our belief in the transformative power of artistic expression and meditation which fueled the success of these workshops.  We are not so unlike those who participated in the workshops.  In fact, we share their reality.  And it is with that understanding that Ocean Ana Rising continues to address our collective need to take consistent measures to assuage the very personal and public hurts that plague our collective home through performance.”
